SPECIES.
While humans are the Earth's most dominant species, they certainly aren't its only species. Elves, mermaids, werewolves, and vampires also exist, and many are even in attendance at Alentia's Sanctuary, honing their magical skill.
Keeping it Quiet...
In the centuries since mages have had to go into hiding, nonhuman species have been forced to come up with creative ways to hide their heritage if they wish to live amongst mortals. While the Veil, a magical "mist" over the world, hides many smaller attributes of nonhumans, enchanted gemstones and clever disguises are popular methods of keeping bigger things (like wings or horns) undercover while in close contact with mortals. Some nonhumans make their homes in mage-majority settlements like Shadestead, where it isn't typically necessary to hide their abnormalities.
Nonhuman Mages?
Any species is able to harness elemental magic, not just humans. Where nonhumans differ here, though, is in nonhuman abilities. Most nonhuman species have biological abilities from their bloodlines, like a werewolf's ability to shift into a canine form, or an Askeri's silver tongue. Of course, like humans, some individuals simply don't have an aptitude for any elemental magic at all, and are bound only to their species-specific abilities.
