SHADOW MAGIC

Very little is known about Shadow magic. Like elemental magic, it cannot be chosen, and Shadow mages must be born with their aptitude for it or have it bestowed upon them by a deity. Unlike elemental magic, however, Shadow magic doesn't abide by any rules elemental magic carefully sets out, making it notoriously hard to study, and extremely rare. Light magic is specialized and only one element can be trained into, but shadow magic is seen as a rarer gift or curse, can be held alongside an elemental magic, and can often go undetected. There are suspected millions of people worldwide considered to be “mortals” that can actually possess forms of shadow magic.

Shadow magic works in tandem with elemental magic, but while the latter is easily categorized, heavily studied and well understood, shadow magic is harder to pin down. Many scholars have attempted to categorize abilities of shadow magical origin, but each person in possession of shadow abilities, even those with powers that are incredibly similar, is bound to a different set of limitations and strengths.It is theorised that each shadow magic ability is as unique as its’ carrier’s DNA. There have been efforts to loosely categorize different shadow magic abilities, but as of current day there is no commonly accepted method of shadow magic classifications.

While shadow magic is generally thought of to be completely unpredictable, it is able to be loosely sorted into vague groups. It is important to note, however, that no two users of shadow magic will experience the same symptoms, abilities, or drawbacks, though many do have traits in common. It is thought to be possible to predict or “tell” the presence of some shadow magics, as some carry physical traits of their abilities, such as warped shadows, telltale eye colours, specific limb deformities or quirks, or, occasionally, complete lack of shadow altogether, though these traits are not universal and many more “tells” are rumoured to exist.. While it is not possible to definitively predict exactly how or to whom shadow magic will manifest, some shadow magic has proven to be hereditary and can be passed down through a family line. Some families make names for themselves in their shadow magic, such as those with gifts in future seeing, while others consider it more of a curse. It is also possible to receive shadow magic randomly at birth, as a gift or curse from a deity, or through other means not yet recorded.
