Mymiks, known in common folklore as “shapeshifters” or “mimics”, have a very widely debated origin. Most scholars agree that they were first created within the Grey, likely by a now-deposed shadow deity that intended for them to act as spies or decorations for a royal court. From there, mymiks were distributed throughout the Grey and eventually out into the mortal world, where it is theorised they were meant as reconnaissance agents for those in the Grey. Mymiks are unique in that they can take on (“mimic”) the form, voice, and mannerisms of any other humanoid creature they have seen before. Animals are unable to be mimicked, and theories have been posited that this is due to the fact that they contain no potential to harness magic, shadow or light, and it is that essence that mymiks must draw upon to take the shape of another creature. Mimicry is almost entirely flawless the majority of the time, but mymiks are unable to replicate the magical skill (light or shadow) of a target beyond physical attributes such as winged flight, and all mymiks have at least one “tell” that shows on their form no matter what shape they take (usually an unchangeable eye colour but has also been recorded as permanently coloured nails, forked tongues, or small horns). Tells can, however, be covered up by clothing or hair. Many mymiks have a penchant for mischief or fear of crowds, making their shapechanging abilities extremely useful. While other shapechanging species like werewolves or bestias have a “base form” they will revert to naturally when weakened, mymiks have no “true” appearance, though many choose an appearance and gender they are satisfied with presenting as the majority of the time when they are not mimicking another’s appearance.

Mymiks are able to live completely normal humanoid lives amongst mortals, and many do. Mymik genes are recessive and mymiks rarely produce shapechanging offspring, keeping their number rather low. However, in areas of high shadow magic concentration, it is not unheard of for new adolescent mymiks to simply be “born” asexually, spawning from only the magic around them. This has led to many rumours of mymiks being inherently evil or “demonic” amongst other species.
