MERFOLK
A staple of folklore, merfolk generally present as graceful, charming water-dwellers. Able to breathe both water and air, their natural form is that of a human with a fish-like tail, gills on the sides of their neck, and sometimes fins on their arms and spine. Tails and fins often take a similar appearance of specific fish species, and depending on where in the world the mer hails from, can be either horizontal or vertical (taking after fish or porpoise-like creatures).
Above water, merfolk are able to transform their tails into a pair of humanoid legs. Gills, however, do not go away above water, but instead simply adapt to the oxygen around them. Some merfolk report fins present on arms or spine do not go away above water either, and can be a nuisance to live with.
