DARK MAGIC
As widespread and silent as shadow, the Corans exist to undermine the Sanctuary's message: Not everyone should be allowed to wield magic.
Founded by resentful humans after the magical war, the Corans have been hard at work developing and harnessing dark magic, artificially bestowing it upon mortals and training to become as powerful as possible. It is their ultimate goal to reclaim the ground that Alentia's Sanctuary currently stands on, unseat the current goddess of magic, and put their beloved Anquesse on her throne, to corrupt each magical element and create a world ruled by dark magic.

DARK MAGIC.
Each of the four elemental magics can be corrupted and remade in the dark image of itself. This was discovered by the group's founder, Everna Coran, in the nineteenth century and has only been pushed further through research as the years have gone on. Dark magic is far more powerful and versatile than its organic counterpart, even allowing the rare mage to harness more than on element, but its utilization comes at the cost of the user's health.
Dark magic takes more the more frequently it is used, and its presence can manifest in scarring of the skin, bile sickness, extreme fatigue, and loss of sanity alongside many more adverse effects. Many high-ranking Corans reject these symptoms, and seem to believe that negative effects of dark magic can be attributed to blood impurity within the mage - the presence of nonhuman blood. It is unclear whether this is backed by anything more than belief, but it does seem to be true that human mortals can withstand more dark magic use than the average mage.
HISTORY.
During the War of the Magus, as the divide between mortals and mages only grew in severity, lines began to be drawn on both sides. For mortals, there were those sympathetic to mages, those who hated all forms of magic, and, of course, those who coveted it. For mages, something quite similar was taking place, as magic users split themselves into a few factions: Simply, those who believed magic belonged with everyone, a substantial group of radicals who believed humans should be the only species not allowed to harness magic, and, finally, those who believed the responsibility of magic should lie only with humans.
One of Alentia Evergreen's closest friends and advisors, Everna Coran, began to grow into one of the latter over the course of the conflict. Her belief was that only humans should have access to magic, and that nonhuman species only "took up space," preventing her brethren from achieving true greatness. Alentia's openness to nonhuman species within the art of magic caused Coran to change sides in the middle of one particularly bloody battle during the 1800s, and it was at this time the Corans were first formed. From here, despite begging from Evergreen, Coran continued to build her ranks, including both human mages and mortals, and when Evergreen and Coran would finally meet face-to-face again, it would be in the confrontation that would cause both of their deaths.
Where their fates differed, however, was that upon Alentia's death she ascended to Pantheon to take the title of the goddess of magic. Coran, meanwhile, was seen heavily wounded and presumed dead, but her body was never found. Alentia does not talk about her lost friend often, but is known to despise the Corans for taking Everna from her.
