BESTIAS

Singular: Bestias (BEE-stee-AS)

Plural: Bestias (BEE-stee-AS)

Children of the Earth, bestias are thought to have originated in the untouched forests and prairies of the wild some 300 years ago, making them a relatively recent development. It is believed that their distant ancestors were humans lost in nature, taken pity upon by the earth god Baarchon, and given the ability to shift back and forth between animals and humans. In modern day, bestias are generally happy to live among other humans, easily blending in, but take any opportunity they can to stretch out in their animal form and enjoy the wild. Most bestias’ animal forms are those of mammals, but birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians are also common. Strangely, “mythical” animals such as dragons or unicorns have not been observed as bestias, and it is theorised that the reason for this is those beings not having originated on Earth, thus making the concept of humanoids shifting into them impossible.

Every bestias is capable of shifting into only one animal, but can do so as often as they like. This skill only becomes tiresome after many uses in one day. In fact, not transforming often can lead to bestias becoming stuck in one form permanently, and it is not advised for a bestias to stay in either shape for longer than one month consecutively. Bestias generally appear as normal humans, but on occasion do keep one or two minor traits (often referred to as “tells”) of their animal form, such as canine eyes, sharp canines, or slightly harrier skin. Larger features such as feline ears or tails are not considered “natural” to bestias in their human forms, and are only seen, very rarely, in bestias who have stayed in one form for longer than is advised and are often viewed as a form of “scarring”.
