AVIAN HYBRIDS
Singular: Avian Hybrid (AY-vee-AN HY-brid) or “Avian”
Plural: Avian Hybrids (AY-vee-AN HY-brids) or “Avians”)
Avian hybrids are a unique species among others discussed as their origins are barely magical, with their lineage consisting of solely humans up until around the last century, when applicable human mages (along with several mortals) were selected by a small British government organization for experimentation, with the goal being to create a new race of superhumans, those with wings and superhuman agility, to serve in military efforts and as reconnaissance. The hybrids, unstable in nature and risk-laden in their application, were visually human on all accounts except for the wings they sported on their back, which always take after a specific species of bird present on Earth. As the project was kept confidential except for those on the highest level, little is known about the methods taken to achieve the avian hybrids’ birdlike wings, save for a few heavily redacted documents that mention some experimental usage of DNA splicing and selective breeding of first generations. Several batches of these “hybrids” were created, with only a handful surviving, and even fewer being considered “successful projects”. Training regiments were harsh and living conditions were poor among the imprisoned hybrids, and as such it was not long before several were able to make an escape.
From there, the government project was seemingly shuttered, with all evidence being discarded and existing specimens seemingly being terminated. The experiment was internally deemed a failure, and the escaped projects were to be hunted down and subdued. Many avians, however, were not, and went deep into hiding, many even siring offspring known as “natural” avians, hybrids born naturally with wings. Though the government has never acknowledged this programme as being legitimate or even gone as far as to humour the project as being anything but a conspiracy theory, avians still tend to keep to themselves and stay out of the public eye, as some have reported still being hunted by corrupted remnants of those who created their people, even after so long. As such, Alentia’s Sanctuary and mage-majority settlements have become some of the very few safe places for this highly-sought species.
